According to the LaSalle Police Service, officers and paramedics responded to reports of a stabbing shortly before 9.30pm. Grewal was found with severe stab wounds and was rushed to hospital by Essex-Windsor Emergency Medical Services, but succumbed to her injuries.
Police expressed condolences to the victim’s family and said investigators currently believe the attack to be an isolated incident.
“The LaSalle Police Service offers our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Ms Grewal,” the police said in a statement shared on social media, as quoted by TOI.
Authorities have not confirmed whether a suspect has been taken into custody. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing.
Grewal was known among the Punjabi diaspora for her outspoken views on social media about developments in Punjab. She had previously criticised jailed MP Amritpal Singh, Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, and Gurinder Singh Dhillon, head of the Radha Soami Satsang Beas.
She had also spoken out about tensions between India and Canada and criticised pro-Khalistan groups.
The incident comes about two weeks after the region recorded its first homicide of 2026. Police have urged anyone with information or surveillance footage related to the case to contact investigators as the probe continues.
