Brussels Airport hit by transport disruption after gas leak closes access routes

Access roads to Brussels Airport were temporarily closed after a gas leak was reported during road construction work, forcing authorities to advise passengers to reach the airport only by train.

In an advisory posted on X, Brussels Airport said, “Due to a gas leak during road works, access roads to Brussels Airport are currently closed. The airport can only be reached by train at this time.”

Train services continue during disruption

Brussels Airport-Zaventem railway station, located directly beneath the airport terminal on level -1, remained operational during the disruption. The airport advised passengers to use train services from Brussels city centre and other Belgian cities to reach the terminal.

The airport’s rail network includes direct services from Brussels-North, Brussels-Central and Brussels-South stations, with travel times ranging from around 11 to 23 minutes. Several trains also connect the airport with major Belgian cities including Antwerp, Leuven, Ghent and Liège.

Brussels Airport said train travel remains one of the fastest and most convenient ways to access the airport, with multiple services operating every hour.

The airport also maintains international rail links through connections to destinations including Amsterdam, Paris and London via the Belgian rail network.
