British Airways is expanding its premium offerings as airlines place greater focus on travellers willing to pay more for comfort and added services. The airline is upgrading its Airbus A380 aircraft with new First, business-class and premium economy cabins, along with improved dining, bedding and in-flight amenities.

The changes will be introduced on the first refurbished A380 in the coming months and will form part of a wider investment in British Airways’ long-haul customer experience.

With 106 Club Suite seats spread across the entire upper deck, British Airways claims this will be the world’s biggest business class cabin. The airline will also install new seats in every cabin, upgrade its first-class service and reduce the aircraft’s total seating capacity to create more space for premium passengers.

The IAG-owned airline has announced new First, Club World, World Traveller Plus and World Traveller cabins as part of a multi-million-pound refurbishment programme. The first upgraded A380 is expected to enter service in the coming months.

British Airways operates 12 A380 aircraft. The retrofit programme involves installing more than 35,000 individual parts on each aircraft, including new seats, larger in-flight entertainment screens, redesigned galleys and updated stairways.

“This is a major milestone for British Airways and the future of our A380 fleet, marking one of the most significant transformations we’ve ever undertaken on any aircraft," British Airways Chairman and CEO Sean Doyle said.

"We've completely reimagined the customer experience, introducing new and updated seats in every cabin, all carefully considered to deliver greater comfort and an elevated customer experience," he added.

"At the heart of the transformation is our brand-new First suite, but this investment goes far beyond a single cabin. From redesigned interiors and upgraded dining to new amenities and service delivery, every detail has been thoughtfully designed with our customers front and centre, helping them to have a more seamless and memorable experience when they fly with us,” Doyle said.

New seating arrangement

The refurbished A380 will have 417 seats across four cabins:

  • 12 seats in First
  • 106 seats in Club World, or business class
  • 84 seats in World Traveller Plus, or premium economy
  • 215 seats in World Traveller, or economy
The aircraft previously had 469 seats. The reduction of 52 seats means its total capacity will fall by about 11%.

Economy class will see the biggest reduction, with seating falling by about 30% to 215 seats. British Airways is using the additional space to expand its premium cabins and introduce new seating and service features throughout the aircraft.

The new Club World cabin will occupy the entire upper deck of the A380. It will have 106 Club Suite seats across four cabin zones.

The cabin will have dedicated relaxation areas, Club Kitchens and redesigned galley spaces. These areas are intended to give passengers more room to move around and relax during the flight.

The upgraded Club Suite design will also feature across the aircraft’s wider cabin interiors, creating a similar visual identity from the front to the back of the A380.

First-class suites with shared space

British Airways’ new First suite will be a key feature of the upgraded aircraft. The suite is designed to offer greater privacy and a space inspired by a modern luxury hotel.

Passengers travelling together in the centre seats will be able to open the divider between their suites and create a shared lounge area. Stowable tables will also allow them to dine together.

Each First suite will have an integrated mini bar with refreshments, including premium snacks and still and sparkling water.

The airline has partnered with British heritage brand Swaine to create a new First amenity kit. The products include face mist, hand and body lotion, ceramide multi-balm, lip balm, face cream and an overnight mask.

First-class passengers will also receive a new woven day blanket, a navy cushion, sleepwear featuring British Airways’ tartan and slippers. When passengers are ready to sleep, cabin crew will prepare the suite with a mattress, cotton duvet and a newly designed pillow.

Changes in premium economy and economy

Passengers travelling in World Traveller Plus, the airline’s premium economy cabin, will receive new seats with larger entertainment screens and privacy wings. The cabin will also have new bedding and pillows.

The new World Traveller economy cabin will feature larger entertainment screens, wider seats and upgraded bedding. British Airways will introduce new pillows with additional filling and a herringbone pattern, along with thicker blankets in the airline’s blue colour.

The new World Traveller and World Traveller Plus bedding and amenity kits will be introduced across the airline’s long-haul aircraft in phases during November.

Why British Airways is upgrading the A380

British Airways’ decision to invest heavily in its A380 fleet comes as several airlines move away from the four-engine aircraft in favour of smaller and more fuel-efficient twin-engine jets.

However, limited take-off and landing slots at London Heathrow make it difficult for the airline to replace the A380 with several smaller aircraft. Upgrading the existing planes allows British Airways to continue using the aircraft while increasing the proportion of premium seating.

The airline first announced plans for its new First-class seating in November 2024. It had originally planned to launch the product in the middle of this year.

British Airways has also announced the next stage of its Heathrow lounge refurbishment programme. The airline said every lounge at Heathrow will be redesigned over the coming years.
