Argentina is set to open its citizenship-by-investment programme, offering foreign investors a fast-track route

Argentina is preparing to launch its Citizenship by Investment Programme, with applications expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2026. The programme could offer Indian investors and their families a route to Argentine citizenship without the standard two-year residence requirement.

The government has now announced the investment thresholds and initial eligibility details. Further rules are expected to clarify the application process, documents, fees and processing timelines.

Investment options

Foreign nationals will have two investment routes:

  • The first is a $350,000 non-refundable contribution to Argentina’s National Treasury.
  • The second is an $800,000 subscription to a government bond created specifically for the citizenship programme.
For Indian applicants, the investment will not be the only consideration. Applicants must meet financial, identity and security requirements before their applications can be approved.

Family members

Spouses and children can apply as dependents of the main applicant, subject to proof of the family relationship and additional contributions.

The contribution for a spouse will be $100,000. An unmarried child aged 18 to 25 without children will also require $100,000, while the contribution for a child below 18 will be $25,000.

Checks for Indian applicants

Funds used for the programme must pass through banks or financial institutions authorised by the Central Bank of the Argentine Republic.

Applicants will undergo checks covering their identity, source of funds, financial background, jurisdictional risk, criminal record, reputation and immigration history. The process will also include anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing requirements.

Argentina’s Agency for Citizenship by Investment Programs will review applications with input from intelligence, financial, security and interior authorities. It will then recommend approval or refusal to the National Immigration Directorate, which will take the final decision.

Residence requirement

The programme is intended to provide qualifying investors with a direct route to Argentine citizenship without the usual two-year residence requirement. The pathway was introduced through a 2025 decree as part of a wider overhaul of Argentina’s immigration system, which also tightened immigration controls and changed citizenship procedures.

For Indians considering the programme, the key pending details include application procedures, supporting documents, processing times, fees, bond conditions and any additional physical-presence or eligibility requirements.

The Argentine government is expected to issue further operational guidance before applications open later this year.
