New Delhi: An Air India aircraft operating between Frankfurt and Delhi was diverted to Jaipur on Wednesday following a hijack alert that turned out to be false.

The aircraft departed from Jaipur after security checks and landed in Delhi, the airline said. It was carrying 293 passengers and 13 crew members.

The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security has launched a probe into the incident. "The relevant security agencies carried out necessary checks and have cleared the aircraft and crew," the airline said. Passengers disembarked, underwent security checks and reboarded the aircraft, it said.

The aircraft was transmitting transponder code 7500, the internationally recognised aviation code for hijacking or unlawful interference, according to people aware of the incident. Air traffic control received the alert and diverted the flight to Jaipur.
