8 things you didn't know your jade plant needs

ET Online

More Sunlight Than You Think

Jade plants love bright light — at least 4–6 hours a day. A sunny windowsill is ideal. Without enough sun, they grow leggy and lose their rich color.

A Pot With Drainage Holes

They hate sitting in water. Always use a pot with a hole at the bottom. Poor drainage can lead to root rot fast.

A Break From Watering

Yes, they’re succulents! Jade plants like their soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is the #1 jade plant killer.

The Right Soil Mix

Regular potting soil holds too much moisture. Use a cactus or succulent mix — or add sand and perlite for better drainage.

Occasional Pruning

Snip off leggy or dying branches to keep the plant bushy and healthy. You can even propagate from the cuttings!

A Deep Feeding

They don’t need much fertilizer. A diluted, balanced fertilizer once every 3–4 months is enough — especially in the growing season

Protection From Cold Drafts

Jade plants prefer temperatures above 10°C. In winter, keep them away from windows that let in cold air or direct AC blasts.

A Good Wipe Down

Dust blocks sunlight and slows growth. Gently wipe the leaves with a damp cloth once in a while to keep them clean and shiny.
