The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Hyderabad and nearby districts, warning of light rain and thunderstorms with surface wind speeds below 40 km/h in the next two to three hours. According to the IMD’s nowcast issued around 6 a.m. on Monday, the affected districts include B. Jagtial, Hyderabad, Jangaon, Khammam, Mahabubabad, Medchal–Malkajgiri, Nalgonda, Rangareddy, Suryapet, Warangal, Hanamkonda, and Bhadradri Kothagudem.

Authorities have also cautioned that the rain could cause waterlogging in low-lying areas and result in traffic congestion across the city. Earlier in the day, Hyderabad was under an orange alert for heavy rainfall, which was later downgraded to yellow after conditions eased.

Hyderabad rain and thunderstorms alert

According to the IMD forecast, several regions across India will experience rainfall and thunderstorm activity in the coming week. The weather agency said that the South Peninsula, East, Central, and Northeast regions are expected to see varying levels of rain and thunderstorms.

South India may see heavy rainfall in coming days

The IMD has warned that parts of South India will witness unsettled weather conditions. “Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu and Kerala from October 12 to 18,” the weather agency said. It added that South Interior Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam could experience heavy rainfall on October 13 and 14.

Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds, with speeds reaching 30–40 km/h, are forecast for Kerala & Mahe, Tamil Nadu, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Rayalaseema, and Telangana between October 12 and 16. The Lakshadweep region will also see similar conditions on October 12 and 13.

Odisha and Central India on alert for thunderstorms

For East and Central India, the IMD has predicted light to moderate rain and thunderstorms at some or isolated places. Odisha is likely to experience isolated heavy rainfall on October 12, along with thunderstorms and lightning from October 12 to 14. Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh are also expected to witness thunderstorms with lightning between October 14 and 16.
