The ongoing wet spell in Tamil Nadu is being driven by an easterly wave over the southwest Bay of Bengal, according to weather officials.
Chennai is likely to experience a generally cloudy sky on Monday, along with light to moderate rain and occasional thunderstorms, said the India Meteorological Department.

Neighbouring districts, including Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Nagapattinam and Thanjavur, may also see intermittent showers. Meanwhile, day-time temperatures in the souther state's capital are expected to remain around 29°C, with minimum temperatures close to 22°C.

Several interior and delta districts could receive heavier rainfall during the day. Chengalpattu, Tiruvannamalai, Villuppuram, Kallakurichi, Salem, Namakkal, Cuddalore, Thanjavur and Ramanathapuram are among the areas where intense rain spells are likely at isolated locations.

In addition, Puducherry may also witness similar conditions.

However, no fog conditions have been forecast anywhere in the state during this period.

Overall, Tamil Nadu is set to witness another day of unsettled weather on January 26, with the weather body forecasting moderate rainfall across large parts of the state and heavier spells in a few districts.

While the wet conditions are expected to persist through the day, meteorologists indicate that rainfall intensity may begin to gradually decline from Tuesday onwards. The wet spell as such will be gradually be replaced by drier weather for the remaining of 2026's first month.

Weather officials have advised residents to stay alert and follow local advisories, especially in districts prone to heavy rainfall. Fishermen have also been urged to remain cautious, as sea conditions over parts of the Bay of Bengal may remain unsettled.

Cumulative rainfall figures since January 1 show that the state has received 26 mm of rain so far, significantly higher than the normal average of 10.8 mm for this period.
