Yashasvi Jaiswal's maiden double century propels India to 396 in 2nd test against England; cricketer's hometown celebrates
Yashasvi Jaiswal scored his maiden double hundred as India reached 396 all out shortly before lunch on day two of the second test against England.

Jaiswal finished with 209 runs, from 290 deliveries, with 19 fours and seven sixes in an innings that spanned across four sessions as the young opener almost single-handedly kept India's innings together.

At lunch on Saturday, England was 32-0 from six overs, with Zack Crawley (15 not out) and Ben Duckett (17 not out) starting off in a hurry.

England has a 1-0 lead in the five-test series, after it won the first test in Hyderabad by 28 runs.

Resuming Saturday at 336-6, Jaiswal tried his best to farm the strike but James Anderson was able to extinguish India’s best hopes of a lower-order rally.

The veteran seamer had Ravichandran Ashwin caught behind for 20, after a 34-runs stand with Jaiswal for the first breakthrough of the morning.

The left-handed opener then rushed to his double hundred, reaching the milestone off 277 balls, and celebrated in style in front of a large Saturday morning crowd.

It was the third fastest double hundred in tests against England, after West Indies’ Gordon Greenidge (232 balls) in 1984 and Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya (254 balls) in 1998.

Jaiswal fell to Anderson shortly after as he tried to hit him out of the park, but was caught at deep extra cover instead. The 41-year-old English pacer finished with 3-47 from 25 overs.

India’s tail was mopped up quickly as it failed to cross the 400-run mark despite opting to bat first after winning the toss. Its next best score after Jaiswal's was Shubman Gill’s 34.

Debutant offspinner Shoaib Bashir took 3-138, while wrist spinner Rehan Ahmed finished with 3-65.

With 25 minutes before lunch, Crawley and Duckett smashed six boundaries in 24 balls to cut India’s lead down to 364 runs.
