Yashasvi Jaiswal walked out to bat on Day 2 of the second Test against West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on 173, only 27 runs short of his third double century. The crowd had gathered in anticipation of the milestone but were left disappointed.

Jaiswal could add only two runs to his overnight score before a mix up with skipper Shubman Gill led to the 23-year old being run out on 175. Jaiswal pushed the a ball from Jayden Seales to mid off and took off for a single, but there was no response from Gill.

Tagenarine Chanderpaul pounced, moving swiftly to his right and throwing the ball to keeper Tevin Imlach, who rattled the stumps to effect the run-out.

The runout denied Jaiswal a well-deserved double ton but it left him visibly dejected as he slammed his forehead and trudged off the field.

The innings also ranks among the highest individual scores by Indian batsmen ending in a run-out.

The list is led by Sanjay Manjrekar’s 218 against Pakistan in Lahore in 1989, followed by Rahul Dravid’s 217 at The Oval in 2002 and 180 in Kolkata in 2001.

Yashasvi’s 175 now slots in fourth, ahead of Vijay Hazare’s 155 against England in 1951 and Dravid’s 144 against Sri Lanka in Kanpur in 2009.
