WTC Points Table: India's defeat in MCG leaves Rohit Sharma with remote chances to qualify for finale at Lord's

India’s chances of qualifying for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final, set to be played at Lord's, took a severe blow after suffering a 184-run defeat to Australia in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Monday.

The loss has left India trailing 1-2 in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy series with one Test remaining.

With this defeat, India’s points percentage (PCT) in the WTC standings has dropped to 52.78, significantly reducing their chances of securing a spot in the final at Lord’s. Australia, on the other hand, consolidated their position in second place with a PCT of 60.71, keeping them firmly in contention alongside table-toppers South Africa.

India’s WTC Qualification Scenarios

If India wins in Sydney (2-2 series result):

• India will finish the cycle with a points percentage (PCT) of 55.26%.
• For India to qualify, Sri Lanka must defeat Australia by at least a 1-0 margin in their upcoming two-match series.

If India draws in Sydney (1-2 series result):

• India will end with a PCT of 51.75%, effectively ruling them out of the race for the WTC final.

If India loses in Sydney (1-3 series result):

• India's PCT will drop even further, leaving no mathematical possibility for qualification.

Australia’s advantage

Australia’s remaining two matches against Sri Lanka are pivotal. With a current PCT of 60.71, they are well-positioned to qualify but must avoid significant slip-ups. A 2-0 series win against Sri Lanka would guarantee their spot, irrespective of India’s results.
