Stand-in captain Bumrah's brigade ripped through the mighty Australian batting line-up, after they were set a daunting target of 534 runs.
This follows their ninth victory in the current cycle, allowing them to surpass Australia. Previously, India had lost the top spot to Australia after being swept 0-3 by New Zealand at home earlier this month.
India's win boosted their points percentage (PCT) to 61.11, moving them ahead of Australia. Australia's PCT dropped from 62.5 to 57.69. Sri Lanka currently holds the third position with a PCT of 58.33.

With every win a team gets 12 points, while for a tie it gets 6 points and draw adds 4 points, as per the International Cricket Council (ICC) rules.
Updated ICC WTC Points table 2025:

To secure a spot in the WTC final, India must win their remaining four matches. With five potential wins against Australia, India could finish with 158 points and a PCT of 69.29.
The next match between India and Australia is a Day-Night Test, using a pink ball, scheduled for December 6-10 at the Adelaide Oval.
Before clinching the first Test, India had 58.33% of possible points, and it trailed Australia in the standings.
