Will Shubman Gill play in India-Pakistan World Cup match? Here is the latest update

India's star opener Shubman Gill's participation in India's upcoming game against Pakistan on October 14 is uncertain due to his health condition. Sources reveal that Gill's platelet count dropped to 90,000 per micro litre following his battle with dengue, whereas a normal male athlete should have a count between 1.5 lakhs to 4.5 lakhs per micro litre of blood. As per a TOI report, medical experts familiar with the situation believe that although Gill may recover physically and see an increase in his platelet count in the next two days, it is highly unlikely that he will regain match fitness before October 14.

Considering the circumstances, it would be wise to gradually reintegrate him into the team. Fortunately, there is a five-day gap after the Pakistan game, providing an opportunity for Gill to potentially make his comeback against Bangladesh on October 19. A source stated, "The sensible thing will be to ease him back."

Shubman Gill didn't join the team that's playing against Afghanistan in Delhi. "The opener who missed the team's first match in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai will also miss their next match against Afghanistan in Delhi on October 11," the BCCI said in a news release.


"He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team," it added.

Gill, who bats with his right hand, was replaced by Ishan Kishan in the game against Australia, which India won by six wickets.

Over the past year, Gill, who is 24 years old, has been in great shape, scoring five hundreds in ODIs. India wants to win the trophy again after 12 years, and his consistent play is considered to be very important to their chances.

India captain Rohit Sharma had previously emphasized the importance of Gill's health and expressed that he would not rush the player's return, despite his desire to have him back on the field.
