Will Indian team win the Cricket World Cup 2015?
Is thrashing Pakistan in a World Cup all that Indian fans wanted? It's best to be realistic about India's chances in the tournament. Two opinions on Team India's road ahead after the Adelaide pep pill.

Thanks for the feast, now get ready for the goodbye

By Ruchir Joshi

If the millions of supporters of the Indian cricket team could be seen as a person, and if that person were the kind of guy who fastforwards to the climax of thriller movies, either out of impatience or in order to save time for more productive activities, then we did supremely well last Sunday.

If the India cricket fan is the kind of glutton who plucks the cherry on the cake and scoffs just the icing without bothering with the mass underneath, then last Sunday should be marked in gold leaf. By beating Pakistan we've basically got what we wanted from this World Cup and there's a strong sense that there is no need to waste our time by watching any more stupid matches.

No really. We got to feast on a medium-satisfying performance by our batsmen and then, for once, our bowlers also failed to let us down, while most of those green grasshoppers batted like we've seen some other desis recently bat against the Australians. For fullest satisfaction there were even two dropped catches (by them) and a dodgy-looking umpiring decision (in our favour) that turned out to be hairline correct, all of these providing just the right amount of value-added burn in delicate corners of the body of the beloved neighbour.

No, in terms of a heavy feast it was perfect. We got to gorge on all the fatty bits while the other lot got the heartburn. We shouldn't be greedy. We should collectively switch off the TV, burp, hit the sack, turn over and go fatly to sleep. And in all our millionplus dreams we should dream of dusty VHS tapes on shelves all over Pakistan, stuck, non-functioning tapes labelled ‘Miandad -- Last ball 6, Sharjah'.

Watching the match, I felt really bad for Shahid Afridi, Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan in a way I didn't for Javed Miandad and Salim Malik in Bangalore in 1996. As one truly great Pakistan player Shahid Afridi and the other two semi-great, they deserved, in their final match against the old rivals, to go out with a win.

Facing a team that had in it one fading semi-great in the captain and one possible future great in Virat Kohli, a team full of mustachioed peacocks and clueless assistant halwais, those three old boys didn't really deserve to lose, or at least not lose so badly.

And why do I say it was the trio's last match against India? Well, it's entirely likely that India or Pakistan won't both make it to the knock-out stage. And if that's too pessimistic, then here's some realism for you: for India and Pakistan to meet again in this World Cup they would both have to reach the semi-final or even the final. It's more likely we'll have a signed agreement over Kashmir and a completely open EU-style border by March 24.

In the meantime, us Indian fans being greedy and as full of hope as a balloon is full of trapped gas, we'll watch on curved screens, in super high-definition and slow-motion as our team gets repeatedly slaughtered by South Africa, Australia and sundry others. And in that slow, month-long dismemberment might lie the only solace for the aficionado of the Pakistan team.

Last sunday lets us keep dreaming

By Boria Majumdar

As the celebrations from Sunday wind down and it dawns on Indian fans that the World Cup isn't over, what will the emphatic victory against Pakistan do to India's Cup campaign? Victory against Pakistan does a lot for team morale. It has helped redeem three months of misery and suddenly, there's a surge.

Looking ahead, the Pakistan match did provide a few answers for captain MS Dhoni as he gets ready to take on South Africa at the MCG on Sunday. First, he might want to open with Mohit Sharma ahead of Umesh Yadav in the bowling department and bring Yadav on first change. Sharma was economical while Yadav in his second spell with a slightly older ball was far more potent than he has been all through the Australian summer. And Yadav did generate some quick pace. In fact, it won't be wrong to say that it was Yadav's second spell and the two wickets off two balls that took the wind out of Pakistan's run chase. That Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja are India's best spin combination was established yet again in Sunday's game. With Jadeja f it , there is a far more composed look to the Indian combination. The late batting collapse notwithstanding, the middle and lower middle order isn't looking as fragile as it has done in the recent past. Ashwin was a revelation. Three maidens in his first five overs in an ODI against a team that plays spin bowling reasonably well was quite spectacular. The ball was coming out beautifully from his hand the flight was back. He was trying to take wickets and not simply to contain – a big change from the Australia Test series.

What the Pakistan encounter did not do is answer the following questions: Is Dhoni no longer the Great Finisher? Can we say that Shikhar Dhawan is back in touch, or is that too early to say? India will need to answer these questions if they want to challenge Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. But now they can plan with a clear mind and sense of purpose. As Ramiz Raja said, "A victory like this is good enough to transform the dressing room."

Dhoni's captaincy stood out in the Pakistan game. Yes, he did not get runs. But it was refreshing to see the way he marshalled his resources. He was hunting for wickets all through and kept the pressure on Pakistan even when they threatened to mount a challenge. At 70-plus for one, we have hardly seen Dhoni attack with two close-in fielders. That's what he did with Ashwin and that's what gave India the vital second wicket breaking a key partnership for Pakistan. Again, with Yadav bowling fast, not once did Dhoni dispense with the slip. His positivity was rewarded when Yadav had Sohaib Maqsood caught at slip off the very first ball.

While there is merit in suggesting that this Pakistan side didn't have the firepower of the likes of Saeed Anwar, Aamir Sohail and Inzamam-ul-Haq, it was Pakistan none the less. Wearing the green jersey, they bring the same intensity out of Indian fans that we have come to associate with an India-Pakistan game. The blue invasion of Adelaide at the end of the game was evidence what this victory meant to Indian fans who had successfully colonised this beautiful Australian city for a day.

As the action moves to Melbourne and we gear up for South Africa, do spare a thought for Virat Kohli. To score a hundred under pressure is the hallmark of a champion. With India's entry into the quarter-final a certainty, one hopes Virat's individual brilliance, supported well by Suresh Raina, Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma, can propel India all the way. Am I thinking too far ahead? India having beaten Pakistan by a thumping 76 runs, I'm entitled to do so!

Knowing him as I do from our time together at the Chennai Super Kings I just have a feeling he could do something special.

It is true he has nothing to prove - he won the tournament on home soil as captain with a six, for goodness sake - but he thrives on the big stage in the biggest matches.

He loves being part of and winning battles and as he showed in the 2011 final, when he pushed himself up the order, he can be a catalyst for his team.

Everyone is raving about AB de Villiers after his world record hundred from just 31 balls - and rightly so - but Faf du Plessis can be just as effective and destructive.

I know his ability having coached him at Chennai Super Kings. He is unorthodox but very driven and he has taken his game forward with huge strides in the past 12 to 18 months.

He is capable of digging in or blitzing the opposition and he will be a wicket every opposition side will be desperate to get and get early.

Everyone knows that with Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Angelo Mathews and Tillakaratne Dilshan, Sri Lanka has a batting lineup to rank with every other side.

But without the retired Muttiah Muralitharan it is their bowling that will come under the microscope and so Malinga really must deliver.

He has lost some pace and comes into the tournament recovering from injury but if he can rise to the challenge then he can lift those around him; if not, it could get ugly for an attack that otherwise lacks that X-factor.

Eoin can be a match-winner in two ways: as captain and batsman.

The team needed a breath of fresh air and someone to lead by example and his hundred in the opening match of the pre-ICC Cricket World Cup tri-series against Australia will give him confidence.

If he gets runs then others can feed off that and although it is too early to know what sort of captain he is, if he can encourage some positivity and belief then England could, just could, be contenders.

When Afridi is on his game he can drag the team along almost singlehandedly.

His bowling has been consistently excellent and against New Zealand late last year he also added surprising maturity to his long-forgotten batting while still retaining his devastating ability to hit hard and long.

If he shines he will also take the pressure off others and as it is his last ICC Cricket World Cup, he will want to go out with a bang.

There is lots of focus, and rightly so, on Brendon McCullum and Kane Williamson, but if Taylor can complement those two at No. 4 then that really will take New Zealand to a new level.

His form at the start of last year against India hinted at what he can do, as did his barnstorming innings against Pakistan in Pallekele four years ago, and he offers skills as either a stabiliser or a devastating finisher.

He will also feed off his mentor Martin Crowe's inspiration given Crowe's role as a Kiwi talisman 23 years ago.

There is lots of attention on David Warner and Aaron Finch at the top of the order but Maxwell is the man who, if he is hot, is capable of winning matches on his own.

I saw that first-hand in last year's Pepsi Indian Premier League when, for Kings XI Punjab, he destroyed Chennai Super Kings single-handedly.

He is unorthodox and I would use him as a floater in the order, give him license to go for his shots and fill him full of positive thoughts.

He is not a player you should count on every time but in tournaments like this, where you need big performances in big matches, he can be the difference between winning and losing.

The new, young captain holds the fortunes of the side in his hands.

The team has the potential to be a fractured environment after the omissions of Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo and his ability to pull the players together and get them fighting for the cause will be fundamental.

He can do that through leadership and also through performances with bat and ball.

If he cannot lift the team through action and deed then the wheels could easily fall off.
