Why MS Dhoni started to trend after Jonny Bairstow's controversial run-out

Former India skipper MS Dhoni started to trend on social media after the England batsman Jonny Bairstow's controversial run-out during the second Test of the Ashes series. Cricket fans recollected the the decision of MS Dhoni to recall English batter Ian Bell after a controversial run-out in the 2011 Nottingham Test between England and India.

Dhoni later has won the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award of the Decade following a fan vote for his decision to recall Ian Bell. The incident also won the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award in 2011. Ian Bell, who was batting on 137, hit a shot and mistakenly assumed that the ball had reached the rope and gone for four. Abhinav Mukund broke the stumps while Bell wandered off to talk to his batting partner Eoin Morgan. Later the Indian team, led by Dhoni, decided to retract the appeal.

After the match, Bell said: “I didn't know until the last minute that I would be going back out again but the way it's been handled has been fantastic and in the spirit of the game.”


England won the Nottingham Test by 319 runs.

Jonny Bairstow run-out

During England's chase of 317 in the second innings, England’s wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow was run-out under controversial circumstances. Bairstow was batting on 10 and England were 193/5 in the 52nd over when he ducked under a bouncer from Cameron Green and inadvertently walked out of his crease, believing that the ball was dead.

But Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey directed an underarm throw into the stumps and Australian team appealed for a run-out. On-field umpires sent the decision upstairs, where TV umpire confirmed Bairstow’s dismissal. England later lost the match by 43 runs.

England coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes believed Australia broke “the spirit” of the laws of cricket in the Jonny Bairstow dismissal at Lord's on Sunday.

McCullum and Stokes agreed Bairstow was out, technically.
