India beat Pakistan for the third time in the tournament and lifted trophy. However, controversies dominated the narrative around the rivalry.
The controversy began when Yadav and the Indian team refused to shake hands with the Pakistani players after the first and second matches. After clinching the final, team India refused to accept the Asia Cup trophy from Pakistan cricket board chairman and Asian cricket council chief Mohsin Naqvi. Later, Pakistan captain Salman Agha even claimed that Indian team disrespected cricket.
At the press conference, a Pakistani reporter asked Yadav if he was the first captain to bring politics into cricket.
"Today you are champions, you played a great game. But the question is, throughout this tournament your behavior towards the Pakistan team has been noticed — you didn’t do handshakes, you didn’t take part in the photo session with the trophy, then you held a political press conference. Do you think that in the history of cricket you are the first captain who has brought politics into the game of cricket?" asked the reporter.
India's media managers intervened before the Yadav could answer, asking him not to reply. However, the Indian captain joked that the reporter was getting angry. He further said that he couldn't understand the query from the reporter before moving on.
"Do I have to answer or not? You’re getting angry. I couldn’t even understand your question — you asked four questions at the same time," said Suryakumar.
Moreover, Suryakumar Yadav also announced that he is donating his match fees from all the matches of the tournament to the Indian Army.
