While Yashasvi Jaiswal dazzled with a flurry of boundaries, it was 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi who stole the spotlight. Opening the innings alongside Jaiswal, the youngster launched Jasprit Bumrah for a massive six off the very first ball he faced. He went on to score a blistering 39 off just 14 deliveries.
The Bihar prodigy continues to impress on the big stage. After standout performances in the Rising Stars Asia Cup and the Under-19 World Cup, Suryavanshi has carried his form into IPL 2026. Last season, he amassed 252 runs in seven matches at a strike rate above 200, including the second-fastest century of the tournament. This season, he began with a stunning 15-ball half-century against CSK and followed it up with another quick cameo against GT.
Earlier, Mumbai Indians won the toss and opted to bowl first at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. With rain affecting conditions, the powerplay was reduced to 3.2 overs.
Explaining the decision, MI captain Hardik Pandya said chasing in a rain-hit game offers better clarity. He also confirmed the return of himself and Trent Boult to the playing XI.
“It has been under covers, and in rain-affected games, it’s better to bat second as it gives a clear idea of the target,” Pandya said.
Reflecting on MI’s previous loss, Pandya added that the team is still settling into the season. “It’s just the start. Mistakes are bound to happen, but we’re focused on improving and executing our plans,” he said.
Rajasthan Royals have started their campaign strongly with two wins and will look to continue their momentum. Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, will aim to bounce back after a loss to Delhi Capitals following their opening win over Kolkata Knight Riders.
