The impromptu jig, which Gavaskar performed after being persuaded by the event’s anchor, was shared by the MCA on their official X (formerly Twitter) account and quickly went viral, drawing admiration from fans and fellow cricketers alike.
'Sunny ji', as he is often called, danced and showed some bhangra moves with Shaekhar Rijwani on the song 'Deewangi Deewangi' from the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer movie 'Om Shaanti Om'. The dance was not it, the 'little master' also joined the music composer-singer to sing along.
Leaving fans in awe, legendary Sachin Tendulkar, aka 'Master Blaster', too, sang the famous song during the celebrations.
The event, held to celebrate the stadium’s golden jubilee, saw an array of cricketing superstars in attendance, including former India captains Dilip Vengsarkar, Ravi Shastri, Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, and Diana Edulji.
Gavaskar reminisces about Wankhede's charm
Gavaskar, who was part of the Indian squad in the venue’s first international match on January 19, 1975, shared heartfelt memories of his bond with the stadium. Reflecting on his initial impression of Wankhede, Gavaskar recalled it as “love at first sight.”"When the Wankhede Stadium was built in 1974, our dressing room was downstairs. When we stepped into the ground for the first time for a practice session, it was love at first sight. Prior to that, we were playing at the Brabourne Stadium, which belonged to a club (Cricket Club of India). But coming here, it felt like the home ground of Mumbai cricket. The feeling is always different when you have a home ground. I still get that feeling whenever I come for commentary. My chest swells with pride," said Gavaskar.
The Wankhede Stadium, which officially opened in 1974, replaced the Brabourne Stadium as Mumbai’s primary cricket venue and has since hosted numerous historic moments in cricket, including India’s 2011 ICC World Cup victory.
