T20 World Cup 2026: ICC says Bangladesh's matches during the T20 World Cup to be played in India, tournament will proceed as scheduled
Bangladesh’s participation in the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup is hanging by a thread after the International Cricket Council (ICC) rejected the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) request to shift its matches out of India.

As per a TOI report, the ICC has also voted in favour of replacing Bangladesh if the team refuses to travel for its scheduled fixtures.

The decision, taken during an ICC Board meeting on Wednesday, marks a major escalation in the standoff between the global governing body and the BCB, with implications that could reshape the tournament line-up.

ICC Issues Clear Warning to Bangladesh Cricket Board

According to sources quoted by The Times of India, the ICC has formally informed the Bangladesh Cricket Board that failure to confirm travel to India will result in Bangladesh being removed from the tournament. The BCB has been given one final day to convey its decision.

The issue was put to a vote during the ICC meeting, where a majority backed the option of bringing in a replacement team should Bangladesh choose not to participate. This effectively closes the door on further negotiations over venue changes.

Why Bangladesh Refused to Travel to India

The standoff stems from Bangladesh’s refusal to play its scheduled group-stage matches in India, citing security concerns. The team is slated to play in Kolkata and Mumbai as part of the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Instead, the BCB pushed for:
  • A shift of its matches to Sri Lanka, or
  • A reshuffle of groups allowing Bangladesh to be based entirely outside India
However, the ICC has shown little willingness to alter the already finalised tournament schedule.

IPL Controversy Triggered the Standoff

The situation escalated following the removal of Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the 2026 Indian Premier League. The decision, taken by the BCCI, cited unspecified “developments all around”.

In response, Bangladesh banned the broadcast of the IPL within the country and later informed the ICC that it would not send its national team to India for the World Cup.

This chain of events turned a bilateral disagreement into a full-blown international cricketing issue.

Scotland Likely to Replace Bangladesh if Exit Confirmed

If Bangladesh formally withdraws or fails to provide assurances, Scotland are expected to step in as replacements.

Although Scotland did not qualify directly for the 2026 T20 World Cup, finishing behind the Netherlands, Italy and Jersey in the European qualifiers, they are next in line based on ICC rankings.

The ICC is keen to avoid disruption to the tournament schedule, which has already been finalised, with Sri Lanka set to host select matches, including the high-profile India–Pakistan clash.

ICC Unwilling to Alter Tournament Plans

Despite weeks of discussions, the ICC has made it clear that venue changes are not on the table. With logistical planning, broadcasting rights, and security arrangements already in place, shifting matches at this stage would create significant complications.

An existing ICC agreement also designates Sri Lanka as a partial host only for specific fixtures until 2027, leaving little room for further adjustments.

What Happens Next?

The BCB now faces a critical decision:
  • Agree to travel to India and retain its place in the tournament
  • Or refuse, triggering automatic replacement

With the deadline looming, all eyes are on Dhaka. A withdrawal would mark one of the most dramatic exits in recent T20 World Cup history and could have long-term consequences for Bangladesh’s relationship with global cricketing bodies.
