Sunrisers Hyderabad names Kane Williamson as squad captain

MUMBAI: Sun TV-owned Hyderabad franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad has named New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson as the new captain of the squad post unceremonious exit of David Warner.

Warner has been one of the highest scorers for SRH. However, after Cricket Australia banned him for 1 year after his involvement in the ball-tampering controversy, SRH had to let him go.

“We are happy to announce Kane Williamson as the captain of SunRisers Hyderabad for IPL 2018,” team CEO K Shanmugam tweeted.


Warner had stepped down from captaincy after the scandal broke out during the third test match between Australia and South Africa in Cape Town last week. Cricket Australia has banned Warner, Steve Smith for 12 months each and Cameron Bancroft for 9 months.

Incidentally, Indian batsman Shikhar Dhawan’s name was earlier doing rounds as potential for the role of the captain.
