Despite Shreyas Iyer's defeat in the just-finished two-test series in South Africa, the legendary Sunil Gavaskar believed the selection committee should be more patient with him. Pointing fingers at the Mumbai batter is unfair, Gavaskar remarked, adding that many Indian hitters found it difficult to get going in difficult circumstances in Centurion and Cape Town.

In these 2 test matches his combined score was very low and because of that there was a lot of criticism that he faced after the series.

After the batter failed to score runs, Gavaskar supported him and demanded a longer run. In addition, he estimated that no other hitter in the series had scored runs, other than KL Rahul and Virat Kohli. As a result, only one player is immune to criticism over his performance.

Since these pitches are difficult for any batter to hit, Shreyas Iyer is not the only one who struggled. Gavaskar stated, "If you see, no one else scored too many runs, barring Virat Kohli and KL Rahul." It is not possible to blame a single player. Thus, he continued, "I think the selection committee will also believe that he should probably be given more opportunities."

With the South Africa series drawing less attention, India will play a 5-match Test series against England beginning in Hyderabad on January 25. In the home series, Iyer would be aiming to resume his scoring ways. Although Iyer's home record has never been in doubt, the young hitter has not yet reached a fifty in a Test match played outside of Asia.
