BERLIN, Jan 13 ( Reuters) - Bundesliga club RB Leipzig signed French teenager Dayot Upamecano from sister club Salzburg on Friday with a contract to 2021, the club said.

The 18-year-old central defender, who last season won the Austrian double with Salzburg, a club that like Leipzig is owned by energy drinks maker Red Bull, will further reduce the average age of one of the youngest clubs in the German league.

Promoted Leipzig has stunned the Bundesliga with their attacking football this season, leading the standings late last year before losing the top spot to Bayern Munich in the final game before the winter break in December. The league resumes on Jan 20.

"Dayot Upamecano enjoyed a sensational development in the past year and a half at Salzburg, making a name for himself with strong national and international performances," said Leipzig sports director Ralf Rangnick.

"He is a player who fits perfectly to our philosophy due to his young age, his potential and his style of play."

Upamecano has played for every French national youth team since the age of 15 but has not yet earned a full international cap. (Reporting by Karolos Grohmann Editing by Jeremy Gaunt)
