Gill, who is playing his 50th ODI match broke the record of former South African batter Hashim Amla’s record, who had crossed the 2,500-run mark in ODIs in his 53rd innings for the Proteas.
The Indian batter needed 25 runs on Wednesday to complete 2,500 runs in ODIs, and he achieved the milestone by scoring a boundary on the fifth ball of the 10th over of India’s innings.
Gill was eventually dismissed for 112 runs.
Gill has made the most of his good form in the ODI format. The Punjab-based batter scored 87 runs from 96 balls in the series opener played in Nagpur on February 6, and in the second ODI in Cuttack on Sunday, he scored 60 runs from 51 balls.
Gill has a batting average of more than 60 in ODIs.
Before the start of the third ODI, Gill rose to No. 2 position in the ICC ODI batter’s rankings. He leapfrogged his opening batter and India captain Rohit Sharma. Gill has 781 rating points, whereas Rohit has 773 rating points.
Former Pakistan captain and star batter Babar Azam is the world No. 1 ODI batter. The 30-year-old cricketer from Lahore has 786 rating points.
