India's Shreyas Iyer, left, is injured after catching out Australia's Alex Carey during their One Day International cricket match in Sydney, Australia, Saturday, Oct. 25, 2025.
Team India’s middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has been declared stable after sustaining a serious injury during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed in a medical update on Tuesday that Iyer suffered a laceration to his spleen caused by a blunt impact to the abdomen, resulting in internal bleeding.

According to the BCCI’s media advisory, the injury was promptly identified and treated, with the bleeding successfully controlled. “His condition is now stable, and he continues to be under observation. A repeat scan done on Tuesday, 28th October, has shown significant improvement, and Shreyas is on the road to recovery,” said the statement.

The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, will continue to monitor his recovery. Iyer is currently admitted to St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, where he is under the care of medical specialists.

Shreyas Iyer's diving catch turns costly

The injury occurred while he was taking a diving catch to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling during the third ODI. While sprinting from backward point, Iyer landed heavily on his ribs and elbows, immediately clutching his left rib cage in pain as medical staff escorted him off the field.

Earlier, the BCCI had stated that Iyer sustained “an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.”

The Board later confirmed that scans revealed a laceration to the spleen and noted that Iyer is “medically stable and recovering well.” The Indian team doctor has remained in Sydney to monitor his progress on a day-to-day basis.

Crucial blow ahead of South Africa series

The update comes as a relief to fans and teammates, given Iyer’s crucial role in India’s middle order alongside KL Rahul and Axar Patel. Iyer had been in fine form before the setback, scoring 72 runs in two games during the ODI series, including a resilient 61 off 77 balls in Adelaide.

In 2025, he has accumulated 496 runs in 11 matches at an average of 49.60, including five half-centuries. He was also India’s top scorer during the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year, amassing 243 runs in five innings.

With 2,917 runs in 73 ODIs at an average of 47.81, including five centuries and 23 fifties, Iyer remains one of India’s most dependable batters. However, the injury has cast doubt over his availability for the upcoming home ODI series against South Africa, scheduled to begin on November 30.
