Shaun Marsh: Australia's SOS and first player to win orange cap in IPL retires from all forms of cricket

Australia's Shaun Marsh on Sunday announced his retirement from all forms of cricket with Melbourne Renegades' final game of the BBL season against Sydney Thunder to be the last of his career.

"I have loved playing for the Renegades, I've met some great people over the last five years and the friendships I've made will last a lifetime. This playing group is special. They've been amazing to me, amazing teammates and even better friends,” Marsh said in the official statement released by Renegades.

Debuting at just 17 years, he rose to prominence when he became the first-ever player to score an orange cap in the inaugural season of Indian Premiere League (IPL) back in 2008. Playing for Punjab Kings, back then Kings Eleven Punjab, he scored an impressive total of 616 runs in the season with a 139.68 strike rate. His highest score stands at 115.


Affectionately known as ‘SOS’ (‘Son of Swamp’; former Australia opener Geoff 'Swampy' Marsh) the left-hander's decision of Marsh to let the curtains fall on his career comes soon after his teammate Aaron Finch who also announced that he would be playing his final match as a professional cricketer at Marvel Stadium on Saturday.


At 40 years, SOS on Saturday scored an unbeaten half-century and winning Player of the Match to guide the Melbourne Renegades to a six-wicket win over the Melbourne Stars on Saturday night at Marvel Stadium. It was his third half-century of BBL season 13.

With one more match to go, Marsh ends his career with 2265 runs in 38 tests, 2773 in 73 ODIs, 47 runs in 15 T20Is to his name with 13 hundreds and 25 fifties to his name.
