The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will wear black armbands during their Indian Premier League 2026 opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday, paying tribute to fans who lost their lives in last year’s tragic stampede outside the venue following the team’s historic title win.

A statement from RCB said, "Royal Challengers Bengaluru will pay tribute to the eleven members of the RCB family who tragically lost their lives in the unfortunate incident on June 4."

"As a mark of respect, players will wear practice jerseys bearing the number 11 during the warm-up, followed by black armbands during the match."

"In a lasting gesture of remembrance, eleven seats at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium will remain unoccupied, serving as a permanent tribute to the fans whose unwavering support will always be a part of the RCB family," the statement concluded.

Stampede tragedy and its aftermath

A total of 11 people died and several others were injured in the stampede outside the stadium during RCB’s victory celebrations last year.

Cricket activities at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium had been suspended since June 2025 following the incident. In the aftermath, several high-profile tournaments, including the ICC Women's ODI World Cup and the state’s KSCA Maharaja Trophy, were shifted at short notice due to safety concerns. The venue also missed out on hosting matches during this year’s T20 World Cup.

Safety clearance and return of IPL matches

Following recommendations from a government-appointed expert committee, the Karnataka cabinet approved the resumption of IPL matches at the venue in February.

In March, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) secured permission from Home Minister G Parmeshwara to host IPL 2026 matches, including the playoffs and final, at the stadium.

Represented by Vice President Sujit Somsundar, KSCA completed the first phase of safety and infrastructure upgrades suggested by multiple departments, including the police, PWD, fire services, and medical authorities. These measures included widening entry gates, improving exit routes, and strengthening emergency medical response systems.

Stadium cleared for full-capacity return

An expert panel led by Maheshwar Rao inspected the upgraded facilities and approved the arrangements.

With all safety measures in place, the M Chinnaswamy Stadium has been cleared to host matches at full capacity, accommodating up to 33,000 spectators.
