Victory
On August 1, P V Sindhu became the first Indian woman to win two Olympic medals, writing herself into the history books at the age of 26. One of India’s once-in-a-generation athletes, Sindhu has excelled at badminton since her first global event - the World Badminton Championships in 2013, where she won bronze.

The coach
After Sindhu beat China’s He Bing Jiao (21-19, 21-19), the most jubilant face in the arena was that of her coach, Korean Park Tae-Sang, who let out a scream of excitement after his pupil secured a medal. In his own words, “a feat he hasn’t be able to achieve.”

History
42-year-old Tae-Sang represented South Korea at 2004 Olympics, where he crashed out in the quarter finals, losing to Indonesia’s Sony Dwi Kuncoro - who would go on to win the bronze that tournament.

Coaching credentials
Tae-Sang coached the Korean national badminton team for five years (2013-2018) and moved to the Indian national team in 2019, initially coaching the men’s badminton players and then stepping in to help the women’s team after the departure of compatriot Kim Ji Hyun.

Consistency
PV Sindhu’s coaching staff has seen ups and downs of late, with her long-time coach Pullela Gopichand occupied with his academy, she moved on to Indonesian Mulyo Handoyo and then to South Korean Kim Ji Hyun - with whom she won the World Badminton Championship in 2019 - before the arrival of her current coach.
