President, PM, Sports Minister congratulate Paes for US Open win

NEW DELHI: President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today congratulated Leander Paes and his Swiss team mate Martina Hingis on winning the US Open mixed doubles.

"Well done @Leander @mhingis, hearty congratulations on winning the US Open mixed doubles," Mukherjee said on the official Twitter account of Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Modi also tweeted, "Well played again, @Leander & @mhingis. Congrats on a great win. We are all very delighted."

In his message, Sonowal tweeted, "Many congratulations to @Leander and @mhingis.You guys are truly legendary!!."

Paes today created history by winning the US Open mixed doubles title with Hingis in New York as the veteran Indian now has the highest number of mixed doubles titles in open era.

The fourth seeded Indo-Swiss pair edged past unseeded Americans Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Sam Querrey 6-4 3-6 10-7 in the final to win their third Major title together this season.

42-year-old Paes now has won nine Grand Slam mixed doubles titles, surpassing compatriot and former partner Mahesh Bhupathi's record of eight titles. He is now behind only legendary Martina Navratilova, who has won 10 mixed doubles trophies.
