The impressive performance of Indian sportspersons at the Tokyo Olympics resonated at the BJP parliamentary party meeting on Tuesday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking MPs to encourage sports activity in their respective constituencies.

Modi also pulled up Rajya Sabha MPs who were absent in the House on Monday when the opposition had demanded a division of votes during the consideration and passage of the Tribunal Reforms Bill, 2021.

India’s performance at the Tokyo Olympics was hailed during the weekly BJP meeting. Sports minister Anurag Thakur made a PPT presentation on the preparations made and facilities provided to the Indian contingent by the government. His predecessor in the ministry, Kiren Rijiju, also spoke about the measures taken during his stewardship.

Modi also asked MPs to make the Azadi ka Amrit Utsav campaign starting next week a success. He also said MPs should ensure the Ayushman Bharat cards are delivered to the poor so that those below the poverty line can avail of medical benefits. He dwelt on the nutrition programme also.

The PM ended his speech with a curt message to the Rajya Sabha MPs not to bunk proceedings. He said a list of those MPs who were not present during the discussion on the Tribunal Reforms Bill should be sent to him. DMK MP Tiruchi Siva had demanded a division of votes on the issue of sending the bill to a select committee of the Rajya Sabha. Though the government defeated this motion comfortably, the senior leadership did not take kindly to some BJP members not being present.
