The visitors are eyeing a comeback with this game in the three-match ODI series, after the Men in Green conceded a two-wicket defeat to Australia in the first ODI.
The series also marks wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan's debut as the captain. He decided to send Australia to bat first in the game which worked well as they restricted the Ozs for a below par total.
Aussie openers Matthew Short (19 runs from 15 balls, 3 fours) and Jake Fraser-McGurk (13 runs from 10 balls, 3 fours) failed to give the team a desired start as they could only make a partnership of 21 runs. Shaheen Afridi gave the Pakistanis their first breakthrough by removing Fraser-McGurk from the crease.
Steven Smith, who was the highest run-scorer in the match for the hosts, scored 35 runs from 48 balls. Apart from the former captain, no other player could score beyond the 20-run mark.
Haris Rauf was the standout performer for Pakistan, claiming five wickets for 29 runs in his eight overs. Shaheen Afridi made a significant contribution as well, securing three wickets. Mohammad Hasnain and Naseem Shah each added a wicket to their names.
Australia struggled to build partnerships, with none of their top-order batsmen converting their starts into big scores. Steven Smith top-scored for Australia with 35 runs. Adam Zampa provided some late resistance with 18 runs.
Pakistan now require 164 runs to win the match and level the series.
Brief Scores: Australia 163 (Steven Smith 35, Adam Zampa 18; Haris Rauf 5/29) vs Pakistan.
