Commonwealth Games: Mirabai Chanu, Lovlina Borgohain named India’s flag and baton bearers for opening ceremony

Olympic medallists Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain have been chosen as India’s flag bearer and baton bearer, respectively, for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.

The two decorated athletes will lead India’s representation at the ceremony, bringing together two of the country’s most accomplished names in weightlifting and boxing.

Mirabai, an Olympic silver medallist and multiple Commonwealth Games medallist, has been one of India’s leading performers in weightlifting on the international stage.


Lovlina, an Olympic bronze medallist, has also established herself among India’s most prominent boxers with notable performances at major global competitions.

This ceremonial honour centres around the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, where the high-profile duo will spearhead a formidable 126-member Indian athlete contingent.

Officially approved by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports alongside the Indian Olympic Association, the entire delegation features 78 men and 48 women across eight core sports and five para-sport disciplines.

The action kicks off on July 23 at Glasgow's OVO Hydro arena, starting an intensive 11-day campaign running through August 2.

While Mirabai and Lovlina command the spotlight at the opening ceremony, India’s broader sporting campaign features elite global icons like two-time Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra leading the 32-member athletics squad.

Strong competitive lineups are also set for judo, track cycling, swimming, lawn bowls, and artistic gymnastics.

Backed by a dense history of success at the Commonwealth level, this year's contingent arrives in Scotland heavily favoured to challenge for podium finishes across both traditional and para-athletic fields.
