Commonwealth Games: Asmita Dey wins India's first-ever women's judo gold in Women's 48kg category

India's Asmita Dey staged a remarkable comeback to win the women's 48kg judo gold medal, defeating Canada's Heidi Quach in a thrilling Golden Score final at the Commonwealth Games on Friday.

The 23-year-old judoka from Tripura fell behind early after conceding a yuko and receiving a penalty, allowing Quach to take the advantage in the opening stages of the bout.

Asmita, however, fought back with renewed aggression and levelled the contest at 1-1 shortly after the halfway mark of the four-minute regulation period.


With neither judoka able to land the decisive score despite a series of intense exchanges, the final moved into the Golden Score period, where the first scoring action determines the winner.

Holding her nerve in sudden-death overtime, Asmita launched a decisive attack to score a yuko and seal a memorable victory, earning India the gold medal.

The triumph completed an impressive campaign for the young judoka, whose resilience and composure under pressure helped her overturn an early deficit and overcome her Canadian opponent in a gripping final. It also marked India's first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal in the women's 48kg judo event.
