India is currently fifth in the Asian Games 2026 medal table after a big medal haul on Friday. India’s tally now stands at 16 gold, 27 silver and 36 bronze medals, taking its overall count to 79 medals.

India added a gold in women’s hockey, with the team beating defending champions China 1-0 to end a 44-year wait for the Asian Games title. India also won two silver medals in archery and a bronze in sepaktakraw on Friday.

Hockey

India beat defending champions China 1-0 in the women’s hockey final, with Lalremsiami scoring the decisive goal in the 10th minute. Goalkeeper Savita Punia also saved a penalty stroke as India held on for victory.

The gold is only India’s second in women’s hockey at the Asian Games and its first since 1982, ending a 44-year wait. The victory also secured India a quota place for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

India lost both recurve finals, going down 5-1 to South Korea in the men’s team final and 5-3 to China in the mixed team final.

The mixed-team silver was India’s first-ever medal in the Asian Games recurve mixed team event. India also missed out on an LA 2028 Olympic quota in the event.

India’s men’s quadrant team won bronze after losing 2-0 to hosts Japan in the semi-final. It is India’s first Asian Games medal in the quadrant event.

India’s historic archery breakthrough

India’s women’s recurve team made history by winning the country’s first Asian Games gold in the event. Ankita Bhakat, Kirti Sharma and 17-year-old Kumkum Mohod defeated South Korea 5-3 in the final.

India had previously won bronze in the women’s recurve team event but had never reached the top of the podium in the discipline at the Asian Games.

The victory added to India’s archery gold-medal haul, which also includes the men’s compound, women’s compound and mixed compound team events.

India ends 44-year wait for women’s hockey gold

The women’s hockey team produced another major milestone, beating defending champions China 1-0 in the final.

Lalremsiami scored in the 10th minute before India’s defence held firm under sustained Chinese pressure. Savita Punia’s penalty stroke save proved crucial as India protected its lead.

The victory gave India its second Asian Games women’s hockey gold and its first since 1982. It also secured the team a direct quota place for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

Neeru Dhanda to be India’s flag bearer

Indian trap shooter Neeru Dhanda has been named India’s flag bearer for the Asian Games 2026 closing ceremony after winning three medals — two gold and one silver.

Dhanda won gold in the women’s trap individual event and the mixed trap team event, besides taking silver in the women’s trap team event.

With India’s campaign nearing its end, the country sits fifth in the medal table with 16 gold, 27 silver and 36 bronze medals.
