Asian Games 2026: India bags gold medal in compound mixed archery team finals, beats Korea

India's compound mixed archery team, comprising of Sahil Jadhav and Chikitha Taniparthi won a gold medal in Asian Games, beating Korea in a shoot-off.

Sahil and Chikitha also secured 2028 Olympic quota place with their compound mixed team gold.

the duo displayed a thrilling show over Korea's Jungyoon Park and Choi Eun Gyu in a final, winning 158-157 after a shoot-off.

Chikitha and Sahil had a strong start at the final, with both archers scoring 10s in their opening shots, as South Korea's Park and Choi matched the effort with perfect 10s, making it 20-20 after the opening four arrows.

In the first end, India continued their strong run with the duo producing another two 10s each to finish the opening end with a perfect 40. South Korean players scored 39 after Park shot a 9, while Choi followed with a 10, giving India a 40-39 lead.

In the second half, Park and Choi combined for 39/40, while Chikitha and Sahil maintained their consistency with four consecutive 10s each, as India led 80-78 at the halfway stage.

The back half of the final archery match saw both teams continue their strong performances. Park and Choi kept South Korea in contention, while Chikitha and Sahil extended India's lead to 100-98 after 10 shots.

India faced their first setback of the final as both Chikitha and Sahil scored 9s, reducing India's advantage when South Korea reached 117 after 12 shots.

By the end of the Asian Games match, Park and Choi opened with two 10s each, putting pressure on India. Chikitha and Sahil responded to the duo with 10s to keep India ahead by one point. South Korea finished their shots with a 10 from Park and Choi, leaving Chikitha and Sahil needing 19 points to tie and 20 to win.

Chikitha then scored a 9 with her final shot, while Sahil delivered a 10 to tie the final and take the contest into a shoot-off.

In the final shoot-off, Chikitha and Park both scored 10s, with Park's arrow closer to the centre. Sahil Jadhav also scored a 10, while South Korea's Choi needed a 9 or better to keep Korea alive. Choi scored a 9, handing India its latest gold medal.

This came soon after the Indian women's compound archery team produced a sensational performance to outclass China 238-234 and retain its Asian Games gold medal with a world record-equalling score.

Indian archers Chikitha Taniparthi and Sahil Jadhav had a beating semifinal where they defeated Thailand 156-155 and enter the final of the compound mixed team event.

India started the semifinal contest strongly, with Chikitha and Sahil both scoring 10s in their opening shots. Thailand's Kanoknapus Kaewchomphu was awarded 9 pointd in the opening end after review, while Peerawat Rattanapongkiat scored an 8. India finished the first end with 39/40 to take a 39-37 lead.
