Asian Games 2026: Neeru Dhanda, Kynan Chenai clinch gold medal in trap mixed team shooting event

Indian shooters Neeru Dhanda and Kynan Chenai clinched the gold medal in the trap mixed team event at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya on Wednesday, setting a new Games record in the process.

Earlier, Indian archers Chikitha Taniparthi and Sahil Jadhav clinched the gold medal in the compound mixed team event after defeating South Korea in a thrilling shoot-off. The latest addition in the trap mixed team event marks the third gold medal of the day after women's compound archery team, comprising Prithika Pradeep, Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Chikitha Taniparthi, won the gold medal.

The Indian pair, Neeru Dhanda and Kynan Chenai, produced a score of 34 in the final to finish ahead of Qatar, which won silver with 32 points. China took the bronze medal with a score of 23.

The performance also surpassed the previous Asian Games record of 30, set by Qatar earlier this year.

The gold marks India's first-ever medal in the trap mixed team event and takes the country's gold-medal tally at the ongoing Asian Games to nine. It is also India's third gold medal of the day.

With the latest win, India's overall medal tally has risen to 56, comprising nine gold, 21 silver and 26 bronze medals.

The medal is also India's 15th in shooting at the Games. The Indian shooting contingent has now won three gold medals, eight silver medals and four bronze medals.

For Neeru, the mixed team gold caps a highly successful Asian Games campaign. The 26-year-old had earlier won the women's individual trap gold on Tuesday, becoming the first Indian woman to win an individual Asian Games gold in trap shooting.

Neeru finished on top of the eight-shooter women's trap final with a score of 26 in rainy conditions. China's Sun Yunong and Kuwait's Hajar Abdulmalik both scored 21 points, while Qatar's Ray Bassil finished fourth with 16 points.

Neeru had also set an Asian record on her Asian Games debut in qualification, missing only two shots out of 30 to finish with a score of 28.

Earlier on Tuesday, Neeru won a silver medal alongside Aashima Ahlawat and Manisha Keer in the women's trap team event. India finished with 328 points, behind gold medallists China, who scored 346. Kuwait won bronze with 325 points.

Neeru was India's top performer in the women's team event, scoring 118 out of 125.

In the trap mixed team final, Neeru and Kynan had qualified in fourth position behind China, Qatar and Iran before producing their record-breaking performance to secure India's gold.

Qatar's Mohammed Al-Rumaihi and Ray Bassil finished second with 32 points, while China's Qi Ying and Sun Yunong secured bronze with 23 points.
