Asian Games 2026: Murali Sreeshankar wins silver in men's long jump

Indian long jumper Murali Sreeshankar clinched the silver medal in the men's long jump at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya on Monday, producing a best effort of 8.07 metres.

The silver marks Sreeshankar's second consecutive Asian Games medal after he finished runner-up at the Hangzhou 2023 edition, according to the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).

China's Shi Yuhao took gold with a season-best 8.17 metres, while Uzbekistan's Anvar Anvarov won bronze with 8.06 metres. Taiwan's Lin Yu-tang finished fourth with 8.05 metres.


The contest was tightly fought, with just 12 centimetres separating the top four finishers. Sreeshankar edged Anvarov by a single centimetre to hold on to silver.

Sreeshankar entered the final after qualifying with a 7.84-metre jump, which placed him second overall. He then crossed the eight-metre mark in the final and stayed in second through the latter stages of the competition.

India's David Solomon Patturaj finished seventh with a best effort of 7.70 metres.

Sreeshankar's medal took India's overall tally at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games to 43, comprising four gold, 19 silver and 20 bronze. India is currently 12th in the medal standings, with athletics contributing 17 medals to the country's haul.

Earlier on Monday, Parul Chaudhary won her second bronze of the Games in the women's 5000 metres, clocking 15:14.61.

Vithya Ramraj also secured bronze in the 400-metre hurdles with a personal best of 54.75 seconds, breaking the national record she shared with PT Usha. Gulveer Singh claimed his second silver of the Games in the men's 1500 metres with a personal best of 3:36.72.
