India's medals at Asian Games: India opened its medal account at the 2026 Asian Games with a silver in the women's 10m air rifle team event, with Elavenil Valarivan, Sonam Maskar and Vidarsa K Vinod finishing runners-up in Nagoya, Japan. Elavenil then added another silver in the women's 10m air rifle individual final, giving India two confirmed medals on the opening day.

India also has a medal assured in women's Traditional 60kg MMA through Suchika Tariyal, who reached the semifinals.

The opening days have already given India plenty to track, from shooting and MMA to cricket, hockey, badminton and table tennis. With several medal events lined up, the focus will now shift to which Indian athletes can add to the country's tally and how the teams fare in the early stages of their campaigns.


India is looking to build on its record 107-medal haul at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games. The 2026 Games, being held across Aichi-Nagoya, will run until October 4, with Indian athletes competing across multiple sports as the country looks to add more medals to its tally.

Silver: Elavenil Valarivan — Women's 10m Air Rifle Individual

Medal assured: Suchika Tariyal — Women's Traditional 60kg MMA

Suchika defeated Mongolia's Altanchimeg Baigalmaa 2-0 in the women's Traditional 60kg quarterfinal to assure India of its first-ever Asian Games medal in MMA. She will now compete in the semifinal.

What has happened so far (Sept 20)

India's shooters delivered the country's first confirmed medal of the Games in the women's 10m air rifle team event. Elavenil Valarivan, Sonam Maskar and Vidarsa K Vinod secured silver.

Elavenil then returned to the range for the women's 10m air rifle individual final and secured another silver. She finished with a score of 252.4, behind Japan's Taichi Hinata, who won gold with 253.0. South Korea's Ban Hyojin took bronze.

Suchika's MMA win added another medal to India's list of assured podium finishes. Her semifinal appearance gives India its first Asian Games MMA medal.

In teqball, Quimcy Dsouza narrowly missed out on a women's singles bronze, losing 11-12, 11-12 to Japan's Yuina Sakamoto. Dsouza also had a chance to compete for a medal in the mixed doubles event with Mohamed Anas Beg, but the duo couldn't deliver the desired result.

India's women's table tennis team began its campaign with a 3-0 win over Indonesia in Group F.

The Asian Games opened in Nagoya on Saturday, with around 11,000 athletes from 45 countries competing across 43 sports and 469 gold-medal events. The Games will run until October 4.

What to watch (Sept 20)

Women's cricket: Harmanpreet Kaur-led India faces Bangladesh in the semifinal. A win would assure India of at least a silver medal. India are the defending champions in the event.

Shooting: India's shooting contingent is expected to remain central to the medal race. The 30-member squad is led by two-time Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker. Indian shooters won 22 medals at the Hangzhou Asian Games, including seven gold, nine silver and six bronze.

MMA: Suchika Tariyal's semifinal will decide whether India's assured MMA medal becomes silver or gold.

Hockey: Both Indian hockey teams have started their campaigns, with the women's team facing Uzbekistan and the men's team taking on Indonesia.

Badminton: India's women's team begins its campaign against Kazakhstan. The men's team, which won silver at Hangzhou, starts its campaign on September 21. HS Prannoy has said the 2026 Asian Games will be his final appearance at the continental event.

India won a record 107 medals at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, including 28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze. The shooting contingent alone contributed 22 medals.
