Asian Games 2026: Gulveer Singh completes medal hat-trick with 5000m bronze

India’s distance runner Gulveer Singh extended his stellar streak at the ongoing Asian Games on Tuesday, securing a bronze medal in the men’s 5000m with a performance of 13:32.75 to capture his third podium result in the Japanese host city.

The 5000m bronze marks his third medal of the 2026 continental event, building on earlier silver-medal performances in both the men’s 1500m and 10,000m races.

With this achievement, Gulveer becomes only the second Indian male athlete to earn three track and field medals in a single Asian Games. He joins sprinter Lavy Pinto, who earned gold in the 100m and 200m alongside a silver in the 4x100m relay at the inaugural 1986 New Delhi edition. Among all Indian track and field athletes, PT Usha holds the top mark with her five-medal haul (four gold, one silver) at the 1986 Seoul Games, while middle-distance runner KM Beenamol picked up three medals at the 2002 Busan Games.

Gulveer, who holds the national record in the men’s 5000m, previously made history at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games by winning bronze, the first CWG medal for an Indian runner in the event. His recent successes build on his gold medal victory at last year's Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea.
