The Indian captain's misjudgement against Ben Stokes's tactical bowling resulted in an LBW decision that left supporters astonished.
During the 50th over, Stokes delivered a ball with sharp inward movement. Gill, anticipating outward movement, chose not to play a shot, resulting in the ball striking his front pad.
After brief consideration, umpire Rod Tucker upheld the English captain's appeal, and subsequent review showed the ball would have struck the off-stump directly.
The decision was decisive, without any room for "umpire's call" deliberation, confirming Gill's error. His brief innings concluded at 12 runs from 23 deliveries, including one four.
The dismissal quickly gained attention online, with supporters criticising Gill's shot selection. Social media discussions highlighted comparisons between Gill's mistake and Nair's previous Test match error.
"Shubman Gill followed his own ‘no time-wasting’ policy too literally," wrote one.
"Leaving a ball that was angling into the stumps. Brainfade moment for Gill," wrote another.
Another X user wrote, "Gill did a Karun Nair."
At one point of time, the phrase “worse than Karun Nair’s last Test leave” was trending too.
India concluded Day 1 at 149/3 after 52 overs, with Yashasvi Jaiswal (58) and KL Rahul (46) establishing a strong foundation before their dismissals to Liam Dawson and Chris Woakes respectively. Sai Sudharsan (26-) and Rishabh Pant (3-) remained unbeaten at Tea break, aiming to build upon the earlier partnerships.
Gill's dismissal continues to dominate discussions from the day's play.
Given the favourable bowling conditions at Old Trafford, India requires their captain to deliver an improved performance in the second innings to address the criticism.
