Cricket will get a new world champion after the final between New Zealand and South Africa in the Women's T20 World Cup in Dubai on Sunday. No South African or New Zealand - be it men or women - team has ever won a world cup.

In the women's tournament, Australia have won six of the eight editions and South Africa beating them in the semi-final was historic in many ways.

England in 2009 and the West Indies in 2016 are the only teams that have managed to win the tournament. The final is expected to be a fitting conclusion to a tournament that has showcased a mix of excellent and average cricket, following its relocation to the United Arab Emirates due to political issues in Bangladesh.



The final will see two teams that have played with the most skill throughout the tournament. Both New Zealand and South Africa have largely held onto their catches, even though New Zealand did complicate their semi-final win over the South Africa by dropping Deandra Dottin twice.

In the New Zealand's score of 128-9 appeared 10 to 15 runs short even on a slow Sharjah pitch. However, they defended that total exceptionally well against the West Indies, whose aggressive batting had previously knocked England out.

Amelia Kerr has been the standout bowler of the tournament with 12 wickets, alongside Eden Carson, who has given captain Sophie Devine hope for the final.

"We are really excited about the final. We have nothing to lose and that is a great space to be," said Devine, referencing her experience in the team that lost to Australia by three runs in the 2010 final.

"We are going to win this thing now."

South Africa were the runner-up of the previous World Cup when they narrowly lost to Australia by 19 runs and Devine acknowledged the threat the pose.

"They are an incredible side," Devine said, highlighting captain Laura Wolvaardt, all-rounder Marizanne Kapp, and batter Anneke Bosch. Bosch's unbeaten 74 led South Africa to a semi-final victory over Australia.

"Laura leads them from the front," she continued. "Kapp is one of the best players in the world [and] Bosch in the game against Australia was superb."


"However, we have to focus on ourselves, and hope the cricketing gods are on our side as well."

South Africa has shown significant improvement in the past year, with Wolvaardt, Kapp, and Bosch leading the batting. Nonkululeko Mlaba has been the spearhead of their bowling attack with 10 wickets and is supported by Kapp and Ayabonga Khaka.

"I'm just incredibly proud of everyone and the team and just the way that we approached this whole World Cup and how we've played throughout," said Bosch following her match-winning performance.

"I think we kind of said we haven't played our best game yet and probably still haven't. But hopefully we're leaving it for the finals now."
