Mushfiqur Rahim retires from ODI cricket after 'challenging weeks'

Veteran Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim has announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs) with immediate effect. The 37-year-old, who was part of Bangladesh’s squad in the recently concluded Champions Trophy, shared his decision on social media.

Mushfiqur announced his retirement from the format on Instagram on Wednesday, saying the decision came after a few "challenging weeks."

"I am announcing my retirement from the ODI format as of today. Alhamdulillah (Thank God) for everything. While our achievements may have been limited on a global level, one thing is certain: whenever I stepped onto the field for my country, I gave more than 100% with dedication and honesty," Rahim wrote on his official Facebook page.


"The last few weeks have been very challenging for me, and I have come to realize that this is my destiny.

"Lastly, I would like to deeply thank my family, friends and my fans for whom I have played cricket for the last 19 years," he added.

Rahim made his ODI debut almost 20 years ago and went on to play 274 matches, scoring 7,795 runs at an average of 36.42. Among Bangladeshi players, only Tamim Iqbal has scored more, with 8,357 runs.

He has also represented his country in 94 Test matches and 102 T20 internationals. While he had already stepped away from T20 cricket, he remains an active part of the Test squad and is on course to become the first cricketer from Bangladesh to play 100 Tests.

Rahim's final ODI appearances came during Bangladesh’s disappointing Champions Trophy campaign, where he was dismissed for a duck against India and managed just two runs against New Zealand.
