ICC Champions Trophy 2025
Before the rise of T20 cricket, ODI cricket was the backbone of the game, offering fans thrilling matches, nail-biting finishes, and unforgettable performances. While T20 has gained immense popularity, the 2023 ODI Cricket World Cup reaffirmed ODI cricket’s lasting appeal. With the much-awaited Champions Trophy making its return, the format is set to capture global attention once again when hosts Pakistan take on New Zealand on February 19 in the tournament opener.

One of the most interesting aspects of this year’s Champions Trophy is that it marks the first ICC event hosted by Pakistan since the 1996 World Cup. However, India will not be playing in Pakistan due to security concerns. The Champions Trophy has long served as a stage for cricketers to make a name for themselves, and as another edition unfolds, let’s take a look at some of the most successful captains in the tournament’s history.

West Indian legend

West Indies have produced some of the greatest cricketers in history, from Vivian Richards, Clive Lloyd, and Garfield Sobers to Malcolm Marshall and Joel Garner. Among these legends is Brian Lara, a batting genius known for his unconventional style and breathtaking stroke play.

Lara enjoyed significant success in the Champions Trophy, boasting a 73.33 per cent win record, with 11 victories in 15 matches as captain. Under his leadership, West Indies reached the final three times and clinched the trophy in 2004.

South Africa’s unfinished dream

Often labeled as cricket’s eternal chokers, South Africa has consistently fielded top-tier teams, known for their precision, sharp fielding, and exceptional skills. However, their inability to win major ICC tournaments has overshadowed their performances.

Graeme Smith, one of South Africa’s most accomplished captains, led the team in the Champions Trophy with four wins in nine matches. While South Africa had the potential to beat any team on their day, their knockout-stage struggles continued to haunt them.

The Australian powerhouse
Australia’s dominance in world cricket is reflected in their rich legacy of captains, from Allan Border and Mark Taylor to Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting. Under Ponting’s leadership, Australia set new benchmarks in ODI cricket, and the Champions Trophy was no exception.

Ponting holds an incredible record in the tournament, securing 12 wins with just three losses, and one no-result. His impressive 75 per cent win rate makes him one of the most successful Champions Trophy captains in history.

The leader who revived Indian cricket
Sourav Ganguly is widely regarded as one of India’s most influential captains, who took charge of the team at a time when match-fixing scandals threatened the sport's integrity in India. Under his leadership, Team India regained the trust of fans and delivered remarkable performances.

In the Champions Trophy, Ganguly led India to seven wins out of nine matches, achieving a 63.33 per cent win rate. His biggest accomplishment came in 2002 when India shared the title with Sri Lanka after rain washed out both final matches.

New Zealand’s tactical genius

New Zealand’s Stephen Fleming was one of the most astute captains of his generation, guiding the Kiwis to new heights in international cricket.

Under Fleming’s captaincy, New Zealand won the inaugural Champions Trophy (the called ICC Knockout Tournament) in 2000, defeating India in the final in Nairobi. He also led the Kiwis to the 2006 final, but they fell short against Australia.

Who will be the next champion?

As the Champions Trophy 2025 approaches, fans are eager to see who will lift the coveted trophy this time. Will Rohit Sharma bring glory to India? Can Mohammad Rizwan lead Pakistan to victory on home soil? Will Jos Buttler revive England’s fading dominance? Can Afghanistan’s Hashmatullah Shahidi make history in their maiden Champions Trophy appearance? And will Temba Bavuma finally erase South Africa’s "chokers" tag by winning their first ICC title?
