India secured a commanding victory in the first Test against Australia at the Optus Stadium in Perth, defeating the hosts by a record 295 runs. Yashasvi Jaiswal's stellar 161 in the second innings, the highest score by an Indian opener on Australian soil, was a key highlight. However, an unusual exchange between Jaiswal and Mitchell Starc on Day 2 also caught attention.
You are Too Slow sledging incident
During India's second innings, Jaiswal, after driving Starc for a boundary, defended a back-of-length delivery and remarked, “It’s coming too slow.” The comment, picked up by the stump mic, drew a smile from Starc as he walked back to his mark. Reflecting on the moment, Starc explained that he did not hear Jaiswal’s remark initially. “I didn’t actually hear him say I bowled too slow. I don’t say too much to people these days. I may have been back in the day, but now I just sort of get on with it. Played that flick shot, and I think I bowled pretty much the same ball, and he defended it. I asked where the flick shot was, and he laughed at me. We just left it at that,” Starc told cricket.com.au.Context to the exchange
The incident appeared to stem from Starc’s earlier sledge at India’s debutant Harshit Rana during Australia’s first innings. After a barrage of short-pitched deliveries from Rana, Starc reportedly said, “I bowl faster than you, Harshit, and I have a long memory.” Notably, the two players had shared the dressing room during IPL 2024 with the Kolkata Knight Riders.Starc praises Jaiswal
Despite the lighthearted sledging, Starc commended Jaiswal for his remarkable innings and potential. “He’ll play a lot of cricket for India and be highly successful. Certainly, he played really, really well in that second innings. He adapted to conditions through that first Test. We got him cheaply in the first innings, and he adapted to that and played a fantastic innings, so full credit to him. He is one of those new crop of fearless young cricketers around the world,” Starc said. The Economic Times Business News App for the Latest News in Business, Sensex, Stock Market Updates & More.
