Ahead of the mega auction for highly anticipated IPL, the Mumbai-based franchise retained Rohit Sharma while ace bowler of the country, Jasprit Bumrah, remained the most expensive retention for the Ambanis at Rs 18 crore.

Mumbai Indians have retained a total of five players-- Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Surya Kumar Yadav and Tilak Varma-- for the upcoming IPL.

“Everything what I have achieved in my life has been part of Mumbai Indians. I think I have received a lot of love back, means the world to me. My journey started here and you know everything what I have achieved in my life has been part of Mumbai Indians," said Hardik Pandya on being retained by the franchise.

The cloud of doubt over Rohit Sharma remained as he didn't perform at his best in IPL 2024, finishing with only 417 runs in 14 matches, averaging 32.08 and maintaining a strike rate of 150. His figures were inflated by a standout innings of 105 runs; otherwise, it was a disappointing season by his usual standards.

However, Rohit led India to the T20 World Cup triumph earlier this year, and now it might just prompt Mumbai Indians to retain the maverick player, who has led the franchise to five IPL title wins.

“Last year, Mumbai Indians made Hardik Pandya captain, and I think he will definitely be retained. Jasprit Bumrah will be retained, Suryakumar Yadav will be retained, and the question remains whether Rohit Sharma will be retained," Harbhajan Singh told Star Sports.

Mumbai Indians’ potential retentions for IPL 2025:

Mumbai Indians, who finished last in the standings this year, face a significant challenge ahead.
  1. Japrit Bumrah- Rs 18 cr
  2. Surya Kumar Yadav-Rs 16.3 cr
  3. Hardik Pandya- Rs 16.3 cr
  4. Rohit Sharma-Rs 16.3 cr
  5. Tilak Verma- Rs Rs 8 cr

IPL retention rules:

Franchises have the option to retain up to six players, with a cap of five capped players and a maximum of two uncapped Indian players.

With an increased purse limit of Rs 120 crore, up 20% from the previous year, all the ten teams will be assessing the situation carefully.

The cost of retaining players is predefined, with the retention of five capped players potentially depleting a team's budget by Rs 75 crore.

Teams opting for fewer retentions have the strategic advantage of using the Right to Match (RTM) card during the auction, giving them the opportunity to reclaim their released players by matching the highest bid.
