Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says the reason Manchester City are running away with the title is because they have spent enough.
Spending is the reason Manchester City are speeding clear of Manchester United in the Premier League race, according to Jose Mourinho. After salvaging a 2-2 draw against Burnley on Tuesday, second-placed United trail City by 12 points.

“Manchester City buy the full-backs for the price of the strikers,” United manager Mourinho said, referring to the summer purchases of Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy for a combined figure of about $133 million.

“Is not enough, is not enough,” Mourinho said of his own expenditure at United, about $400 million in the last 19 months. “And the price for the big clubs, the price for the big clubs is different from the other clubs, so the big, historical clubs are normally punished in the market for that history.”

He also said that while United remain a ‘big club’ they were no longer one of the best teams in the world. “One thing is a big club and another thing is a big football team that you know is not one of the best teams in the world, so when you speak about responsibilities to win the Premier League, (doesn’t) Tottenham have that responsibility? Tottenham is not a club with the same history as us. Doesn’t Arsenal have the responsibility to win it, Chelsea?”

It could have been worse for United on Tuesday. Jesse Lingard came off the bench at halftime to score twice and cancel out first-half strikes from Burnley’s Ashley Barnes and Steven Defour. United were at least on the right side of a stoppage-time equalizer this time, having conceded in the final moments last Saturday to give up the lead at Leicester. United are now just one point ahead of thirdplaced Chelsea.

LIVERPOOL LANDSLIDE

Manager Jurgen Klopp insists he is not interested in individual goal tallies of his attacking players because they will all get opportunities to find the net. Two goals from Roberto Firmino and one each from Philippe Coutinho, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain helped Liverpool to an emphatic 5-0 win over Swansea City at Anfield.

The victory ensured Liverpool remain in the thick of the battle for the Champions League places in fourth spot — five points behind secondplaced United.

However, Klopp preferred to extol the virtues of the collective efforts of his players rather than single out individuals. “I am happy for all the boys when they score but I couldn’t say how many he has, or how many he has, I don’t care.”
