Lucknow SuperGiants IPL records: Can Pant booster & batting firepower revive LSG’s fortunes this year?
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG): As the 2025 IPL season approaches, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) aim for the elusive trophy after narrow near-misses in previous years. Retaining a strong core with players like KL Rahul, Nicholas Pooran, and Mohsin Khan,...

One of LSG's biggest strengths is its overseas batting firepower. The likes of Nicholas Pooran, David Miller, and Aiden Markram add immense value to the middle order, each capable of turning a match single-handedly. Adding to this arsenal is Mitchell Marsh whose expected availability, even if its only as a batter, provides firepower in the ranks and flexibility in the batting order.

A significant boost to the team's batting depth comes in the form of Rishabh Pant. It will be interesting to see if he can replicate his exploits of Feroz Shah Kotla in the Ekana stadium in Lucknow. The Indian dynamite has been a middle-order batsman traditionally, but there is speculation that he could take on the No 3 spot or even open the innings in certain situations. If that happens, his aggressive stroke play could set the tone for the LSG's innings and give them an early advantage in high-pressure matches. It could also be a discovery for the national team.
LSG’s journey so far:
Lucknow Super Giants, like Gujarat Titans, made a strong impact in their debut season in 2022, reaching the playoffs both years, though they fell short of advancing further. In 2022, they were eliminated by Royal Challengers Bangalore in the eliminator, while Mumbai Indians knocked them out in 2023.ALSO READ: Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL: Full schedule, squad, past wins, key stats and more
In 2024, LSG appointed Justin Langer as the new head coach after deciding not to renew Andy Flower’s contract.
Debut in 2022
In their debut season, the Super Giants secured a playoff spot with nine wins in the group stage. KL Rahul, Quinton de Kock, and Deepak Hooda collectively scored nearly 1600 runs, while uncapped seamer Mohsin Khan had a standout season. However, LSG were defeated in the high-scoring Eliminator by Royal Challengers Bangalore.Playoffs in 2023
After securing eight wins in the league stage, LSG reached the playoffs for the second consecutive year, only to be eliminated once again in the Eliminator. Although they lost captain KL Rahul to injury early in the season, overseas players Kyle Mayers, Nicholas Pooran, and Marcus Stoinis stepped up to keep the team's momentum going.Failed to qualify in 2024
LSG missed the playoffs for the first time in three years, struggling throughout the season with inconsistent batting at the top and a lackluster bowling attack. Devdutt Padikkal, acquired through a trade, had a tough run with several single-digit scores, while Quinton de Kock was only sporadically effective. Despite the stabilizing presence of KL Rahul and Nicholas Pooran, LSG couldn't find their rhythm, resulting in a mid-table finish. What lies ahead?
In the bowling side, LSG depends heavily on Indian pacers -- Mohsin Khan, Mayank Yadav, Akash Deep, and Avesh Khan -- with Ravi Bishnoi, Shahbaz Ahmed, and Manimaran Siddharth handling the spin department. While this approach ensures familiarity with Indian conditions, the lack of an experienced overseas fast bowler could be a potential vulnerability.Despite a few areas of concern, the team remains a strong contender for the IPL 2025 title. The key to their success will be the performance of their young pacers and the consistency of their overseas batsmen.
