New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson on Sunday became the fifth New Zealand bowler to take a T20I hattrick. The milestone came in the second T20I against Sri Lanka at Dambulla.

The pacer dismissed Kusal Perera for three of the last ball of the sixth over. He then came back to bowl the eighth over and got rid of Kamindu Mendis and Charith Asalanka of the first two balls.

The effort came as New Zealand are defending a low total of 109 in order to draw the two-match series 1-1. For Sri Lanka, leg-spinner Wanindu Hararanga picked up four wickets, while pacer Matheesha Pathirana grabbed three.

Ferguson has joined the likes of Jacob Oram, Tim Southee, Michael Bracewell and Matt Henry to pick a T20I hat-trick. Overall, this is the sixth instance where a bowler from New Zealand has picked a up hat-trick in T20Is as Southee has achieved the feat twice. New Zealand has drawn equal with Sri Lanka for most hat-tricks taken by a country in the shortest format.

List of T20I hat-tricks by New Zealand bowlers

  1. Jacob Oram vs Sri Lanka (2009)
  2. Tim Southee vs Pakistan (2010)
  3. Michael Bracewell vs Ireland (2022)
  4. Tim Southee vs India (2022)
