Rohit Sharma scored a boundary off the first ball but was clean-bowled by Dilshan Madushanka's next delivery.
Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill then held fort to consoidate India innings from there on with a quickfire fifty-plus partnership, but both failed to complete their centuries and lost their wickets to Dilshan Madushanka, with Gill perishing early after scoring 92 off 92 balls and Kohli missing out on equalling legendary Sachin Tendulkar's record of 49 ODI hundreds after scoring 88 off 94 balls.
Two quick wickets provided much-needed relief to Sri Lanka, but that was short-lived as Shreyas Iyer and in-form KL Rahul maintained the scoring momentum and took India over 250 but 60 (46) runs-parternship was broken by Dushmantha Chameera after KL Rahul played a poor drive to give an easy catch to Hemantha and perished at 21 off 19 balls.
Swashbuckling batter Suryakumar Yadav's stay was short-lived in the middle as he scored just 12 off 9 and Madushanka got his fourth wicket. Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer played the role of sheet anchor by scoring 82 (56) with the help of 6 sixes. India lost three wickets quickly in the end but managed to score 357-8 off 50-overs.
Brief scores: India 357/8 in 50 overs (Virat Kohli 88, Shubman Gill 92, Shreyas Iyer 82; Dilshan Madhushanka 5/80).
