The focus, however, was not just on the result but on Shubman Gill’s return to the side and his short yet lively innings at the top. Shubman Gill made his return to the Indian team with an unbeaten 20 off nine balls in the Asia Cup 2025 opener against UAE. Partnering Abhishek Sharma, the left-right duo wasted no time in closing out a modest chase after UAE were bundled out for 57. Gill, who walked back into international cricket with the added responsibility of being India’s Test captain, reminded fans of his fluency by striking two boundaries and a clean six that had even Wasim Akram excited in the commentary box. While the chase was routine, the game offered India a chance to test combinations, assess conditions, and build rhythm ahead of their high-voltage clash with Pakistan.

Pakistan great Wasim Akram, on air when Gill struck the six, said: "Look at that shot, look at that shot, unbelievable into the stands. Just a flick of the risk, unbelievable shot."

UAE dismissed for 57 runs

India bowled first after winning the toss and bowled UAE out for 57 runs in 13.1 overs. Kuldeep Yadav led the attack with four wickets, while Shivam Dube added three. The chase ended quickly with India sealing the win inside the powerplay.

India captain Suryakumar Yadav explained the decision to field first at the post-match presentation. He said: "Wanted to see how the wicket was playing. It was the same in the 2nd innings. Clinical performance from the boys, we wanted good attitude and energy on the field and that's what we got. Recently lot of the boys were here for the Champions Trophy, the wicket looked good but it was on the slower side and the spinners have a role.

"Here it is very hot right now and Kuldeep did well, got good support from Hardik, Dube and Bumrah. (on Abhishek) He is currently the World number one batter for a reason, he sets the tone, irrespective of if we chase 200 or 50, unbelievable from him. Everyone is excited for the game against Pakistan."
