Marking a new beginning, Italians celebrated winning the European Championship soccer title with fireworks, singing and music. The country, like ever other, has been yearning to return to normalcy amid the pandemic and many took to the streets in Rome after the game. Italy beat England in a penalty shootout to win its first major soccer title since 2006.

For many, the return the Championship was seen as the light at the end of the tunnel. Italy was hit hard during the first wave of COVID and suffered immensely as the healthcare infrastructure crippled as toll kept rising.

Many restrictions have been lifted since then and the others were largely ignored by the fans who were dancing and singing “we are champions of Europe.” This was Italy second big win this year as Italian bank Maneskin won the Eurovision Song Contest in May.
